The Ladies had their day at the World Series of Poker Circuit Harrah's Rincon on February 3, 2008. The event, which is part of the High Heels Poker Tour, a series seeking to bring women to the next competitive level in the game, drew 91 entrants. With a $200 buy-in, the ladies generated a prize pool of $17,654.

The final nine made bank in the event. The lion's share of that went to Gigi Dong, a resident of Westminster, California. Dong is no stranger to tournament success. She's previously cashed at the WSOPC Atlantic City and on the World Poker Tour.

Susie Isaacs, Barbara Enright, Linda Johnson and Marsha Waggoner were inducted into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame (WIPHOF) on Saturday February 2, 2008. The WIPHOF is the brainchild of Lupe Soto, the lady behind the LIPS Tour and a group of talented and driven chicks with chips. At 11 am on Saturday the induction ceremony got underway at Binion's Bullpen at the Binion's Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Mike Sexton played host and emcee. 

According to Kenna James, who was in attendance with is lovely wife, Marsha Waggoner, a beautifully done slide show got things started. The ladies were shown in various stages of their careers and lives. Afterwards, a nice lunch was provided. Then, the ladies were inducted after an introduction highlighting their personal and professional accomplishments. Each inductee was given a bouquet of yellow roses, which added a great touch.

Industry icons such as Jack McClelland, Barry Schulman, Matt Savage, JJ Lieu and Kathy Liebert joined the ladies in the celebration. Induction into the WIPHOF includes contributions not just to the game but also the industry of poker.

To be eligible for induction in the WIPHOF, candidates must:

1. Be active poker players or industry leaders for at least fifteen years prior to their induction.
2. Contribute to the world of poker in a significant way either by winning major tournaments or making significant contributions to the industry of poker.
3. Be a proponent of women's poker. She needn't play in women-only events, but she must support them.

Vanessa Selbst, who honed her game playing poker at both MIT and Yale, is a former athlete. Fiercely competitive and highly intelligent, Selbst is made for this game. She's made three final tables at the WSOP including an eighth place finish at the 2007 Ladies NLHE Championship.

Right now, Selbst, a resident of New Jersey, is making headlines for taking down the second event in the World Poker Tour Ladies League. She defeated 81 other ladies in the tournament, which was held as part of the LA Poker Classic. The $1,000 buy-in competition occurred on Sunday February 3.

The final table was a star-studded affair. Sitting down at the table was Crystal Osgood-Gray, the founder of the Ladies Poker Association. A wife and mother, Osgood-Gray is dedicated to being an advocate and a spokesperson for women in poker. In addition to Osgood-Gray, Full Tilt pro, Erica Schoenberg, a former blackjack superstar, was in the thick of the action. Schoenberg, who appeared at the WPT's Ladies Night IV event and won more than $100,000 at the 2007 Mandalay Bay Poker Championship, made it to heads-up play against Selbst.

Selbst hanged tough and took her first title as well as $26,500 for her efforts. Congrats to Vanessa and all the ladies who took part in this fantastic and well-played event!

We've got to say that we're all about equality in the game of poker here at Chicksnchips.com. We want to see a 50/50 split of men and women at the poker table. We want more women to break the glass ceiling of the game like Annette Obrestad did at the 2007 WSOPE Main Event. We need more women, especially talented, women in poker.

We support 'ladies' events because they are a comfortable breeding ground for poker talent. The buy-ins are usually more affordable for women who still earn less than men. The atmosphere is convivial. There's no sexist jerk sitting at the table making snide comments and silly innuendo talk. For those of you who don't think it happens...we can tell you from experience that it does.

Unfortunately, some people miss the boat on ladies-only events. They feel that they are discriminatory and, in a weird way, sexist ... because they discourage men from entering.

On January 28, 2008, the Bureau of Gaming Control in California sent a special communiqué to the gaming establishments in The Golden State. In it, they stated that:

Under the Unruh Civil Rights Act (Civil code sections 51 and 51.5), businesses may not discriminate in admittance prices, or services offered to customers based on the customers sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, martial status, or sexual orientation. "Ladies Only" tournaments or any other promotional events that fail to admit men and women to advertised activities on an equal basis regardless of sex are unlawful. It may also be unlawful under the Unruh Act to advertise tournaments as "ladies only" even if men are in fact admitted.

From now on:

The Bureau will approve only those events that include the following features: the event will be open to all customers, the promotional gifts will be given equally to all participants, the fees and prices will be the same for all event participants, any discounts will not be based on gender or another personal characteristics protected by the Unruh Act, and the events promotional materials do not advertise gender-based discounts or imply a gender-based entrance policy or any other unlawful discriminatory practice

In adherence with this policy, California card rooms will make sure that their advertisements and room guidelines use the proper verbiage from now on. They will take out the word ONLY if it was ever used at all (in many cases it never was) and allow men to register in any event they wish to play in.

Most ladies events, including the LIPS Tour, have registered men who desired to play all along, and will continue to do so.

Why the BCG is taking issue with this now we just don't fully understand? There are women-only tennis events, women-only golf events and so forth. Are these also discriminatory? We really don't think so and would hate to see a silly precedent get set in this case.

However, we welcome men into any ladies-predominant events in California and anywhere else. Contrary to what some men may think, they aren't a walk in the park. We can't wait for you to show us what you've got...on the felt.

And, we'd love to be a fly on the wall when you tell your drinking buddies how you became a LIPS Tour champion or what have you.

On January 19, 2008 a bunch of ladies took to the felt at the Orleans Casino, just a wee bit off the Las Vegas strip. Sitting amongst the crowd were two poker icons, Barbara Enright and Susie Isaacs. Both ladies will be inducted into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame in early February (and deservedly so).

Only 44 entrants paid their $150 + $25 to play in the tournament. Perhaps the rest of the gals were voting in the Nevada caucuses. Politics takes a back seat to poker for some, but not the ladies at the Orleans on that special Saturday morning.

They fought over one of the biggest prizes in ladies poker, a seat at the LIPS Tour championship this July. Every woman wanted to win. However, only one woman could. The road to the win wasn't smooth, however. Susie Isaacs nearly busted out of the event on the fifth hand of play. Her pocket aces were trumped by the set of queens her opponent made on the river.

Ouch!

With just 450 of her 5,000 chips left, Isaacs, a two-time WSOP Ladies Seven Card Stud champion and author of the new novel, White Knight, Black Nights, battled back. The woman knows how to handle a short stack. Six hours later, after getting heads up with Briana Bramer, the lady emerged a winner.

Congrats to Susie Isaacs on her first LIPS win. We know it won't be her last.

The Ladies Freeroll of the Ladbrokes Poker Cruise III took place this week. The top four finishers received a ticket to the Ladbrokes European Ladies Championship. The ELC, as that tournament is called, will be held over the May bank holiday in London. It will also be filmed for television. The winner of that tournament receives a fantastic cash prize of $30,000. The top Ladbrokes' Qualifier will get a cool $14,000 WSOP Prize Package. 122 ladies took to the felt at the start of Day One. These ladies came to play. They battled hard throughout the day until only 18 remained. Amongst those was the chip leader, Gail Smith. She held 29k in her lovely hands. Breathing down her neck were Kate Barbrook and Trine Hift. These gals had 28,400 so you know Day Two was going to be fantastic.

And the ladies did NOT disappoint. By the time play got down to five, the tension was unbearable. Nearly every hand was an 'all in' situation. You could tell these ladies were playing for keeps - and one of the four slots to the 2008 ELC.

Unfortunately, the bubble lady was Day One's own chip leader, Gail Smith. Along with the players finishing 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th, she received ELC Weekly Final seats at Ladbrokes Poker.

The last lady standing in this freeroll was Michelle "Michelle1" Bennett.

At the age of 4, Barbara Enright learned to play five card draw. Her opponent was usually her older brother. She was so good at the game that she often made him cry. A truly hard worker, Enright often worked three jobs to support her family. At one point, she worked as a cocktail waitress, hair stylist and bartender at the same time. However, after entering her first card room to play in 1976, she began to make more money playing poker part-time than she did all her other jobs combined.

Barbara quit doing anything else professionally. Enright, the editor-in-chief of Woman Poker Player magazine, has three World Series of Poker bracelets. She earned her first in 1986 in the Women's Seven Card Stud tournament. She followed that up in 1994 with a second bracelet in the same event. In 1996, she won her first and only open bracelet in Pot Limit Hold'em.

However, Enright's biggest World Series of Poker achievement is, by far, her fifth place finish in the Main Event back in 1995. That's the highest level any woman has reached to date in that tournament. She was beat badly with her pocket eights after Brent Carter called her with an unsuited 6,3...and won the pot, knocking her out.

A true trailblazer, Enright is the first woman to win two and then three bracelets at the WSOP. She was also the first lady to win an open event.
Married to poker author Max Shapiro, the limit specialist made it deep in the WSOP Main Event in 2005, cashing once again. Her aggression and her skill gave her the distinction of being the first (and so far) only woman inducted into the World Series of Poker Hall of Fame, a reward she earned in 2007.
 
Although Barbara prefers playing online these days - she's held a sponsorship deal with Paradise Poker and uses the moniker "ItsOnlyMe" there - the lovely lady will be front and center at the 2008 Women in Poker Hall of Fame NLHE Tournament. She's one of four women being inducted in the WIPHOF, a place she truly belongs.

Lisa Tenner, founder and president of Tenner & Associates, is a branding impresario. A former ballerina who moved onto the business world to become a successful securities trader in Los Angeles, Tenner moved into the entertainment industry and began servicing bands such as The Tubes and Toto. She's also worked closely with KoRn, Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden. In 1991, Tenner opened her own firm and went on to create The Emerging Artists' Fund, which, according to the Tenner & Associates official web site, encourages education in the field of recording arts & sciences through scholarships, grants and professional stipends.

Tenner, who makes her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, has a distinguished gaming clientele including Bally's Paris Hotel & Casino, The Hard Rock Hotel and PartyPoker.com. She was also instrumental in brokering the Ultimate Poker Challenge, bringing it to TV back in 2005.

Mrs. Tenner is also the driving force behind the Queen of Hearts, a group of talented poker professionals and female celebrities who play at the World Series of Poker Ladies' Championship. The players contribute a portion of their winnings to the American Heart Association and the Nevada Cancer Institute. Last year, Tenner took to the felt as co-captain of the team along with actress Mimi Rogers. Also included in the roster for the 2007 Queen of Hearts were JJ Liu, Jennifer Tilly, Jennifer Jennicide Leigh, Isabelle Mercier, Clonie Gowen, Susie Isaacs and the 2006 champion, Mary Jones.

For this achievement, Tenner was named by Global Gaming Business Magazine as one  of the 25 people to watch for 2008. In 2007, Tenner was also named Event Pro of the Year by the EventPro Forum. According to the press release, the EventPro Awards honor excellence in live-event production and single out one individual in the live-event industry who has demonstrated a significant record of achievement during the preceding year.

Pamela Anderson is always on our watch list. We love the fact that she traded 'favors' to pay off a poker debt. It's something we'd never do...not even if we were asked, but we sort of respect her for it in a weird, alternate or parallel universe sort of way. A lady has the right to use her assets to whatever advantage she wishes.

Apparently, Pammie was out and about last weekend at the Hard Rock in Seminole, Florida with an animal rights activist and a drag queen. She was enjoying herself without her soon-to-be-ex-hubby Rick Salomon, a supposed 'poker pro' who is best known as the man behind One Night in Paris, the video starring celebutante Hilton. The divorce is definitely still on.

Pam is not preggers. Whether she was before or not, no one really knows. She's clearly stated that she doesn't want any more children and is looking forward to spending time with her sons, Brandon and Dylan. Their daddy, of course, is ex-hubby Tommy Lee.

The gossip mill is ablaze about Pammie's breasts. They looked smaller somehow in the yellow dress she wore to the nightclub in Florida this past weekend. This causes peeps to speculate that the former Baywatch babe had a breast reduction. (She did that before - back in 1999 - but rebuilt the mammaries back up again soon afterwards.)

Other reports say that Pam may one day revisit her Nordic roots. She has said that she hopes to return to Finland, where her granddaddy comes from. Her plan - to open a strip club called Lapland.

That's just what the Finns need, right?

Okay! We are fans of Joe Hachem. The 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champ has proven that he's no one-hit wonder. The Lebanese-born, Aussie transplant is a happily married father of four. We've seen him and his lovely wife Jeannie all over the place. She's never too far away from her hunky hubby...and we don't blame her one bit.

So, we were reading the internet this week. We love to keep abreast of goings-on in the poker (and celebrity) world. Get this! We caught a truly horrific story about Joe Hachem supposedly dating the popwreck. C'mon now. We had to read because we were scared for poor Joe (and his kiddoes).

We also were clinging to the hope that he might be available. (Hey a bunch of gals can dream, can't they?)

Anyway, the blokes at Wicked Chops dished that Spears' new boytoy, paparazzo Adnan Ghalib bears more than a striking resemblance to Hash. We don't see it. They were clear that Spears and Hachem are not an item. They were just playing a funny.

Unfortunately, we find it anything but.
