World Series of Poker - Video Game Review

January 24, 2006 -

The World Series of Poker game for the Play Station 2 is awesome. My son got it for Christmas because well, Santa wanted it too (hehehe)!!!! You can play 26 official World Series of Poker Events from Stud to Holdem, Omaha to Lowball and everything in between. I've made it to the final day of the Main Event - at least in a video game.

You can play against simulated versions of your favorite pros such as Scotty Nguyen, Chris Ferguson, John Phan and Men "The Master" Nguyen. So, set up your guy - or gal - and get going. Actually, with so many options with hair color, eye color, clothing and so forth, you can set up several players on your memory card with a variety of looks from hip hop chick to grandma or skater girl to gangster. You can even add piercings, eyeglasses and other accessories.

If you have a network adapter, you can play against anyone on the internet. Now, that's cool! Of course, I'm happy to play against the simulated players. Without the adapter, the game is only for one player; but, it's still great fun. I like to shadow my son and just watch how he handles hands. He's only 8 - and he does pretty well for himself. Who knows? Maybe someday he'll win the live WSOP Main Event.

I like to play in career mode because I sort of pretend it's my practice career. However, if you don't want to, you can set up your own custom tourneys. You can play any game offered - either single table or multi-table up to 512 tables! Starting cash is up to $25,000 so you can do a highstakes game or a lower-limit event. Limits are pot-limit, limit and no-limit. There's loads of options for you to play!

If you do play in career mode, you collect more than cash. You get collector chips everytime you bust a player, get a pair or a full house, etc. You get $10,000 to start with - enough to play in the Main Event. Of course, if you'd rather, there's a satellite tourney you can play for a much smaller buy-in. If you end up with $15,000 or more, you can buy in to the Hollywood Tourney - it's a single table game that's a monster to play! Really challenging - and fun!

All in all, I think any fan of the World Series of Poker will love this game. It's the next best thing to being there playing yourself.
