Tales from the Felt - Titan Poker's Ladies WSOP Main Event Satellites
February 25, 2006 -
What's wrong with me? I can beat a table full of guys. I can place or win tournaments with mixed company. I earn cash - not a ton but some - regularly online. But...I can't seem to crack the competition at Titan Poker's Ladies' WSOP Satellites.
Is it because I suck majorly? Is it that the competition is just too good? Is it that women bluff more effectively than men? I don't know. I don't know if it's a gender thing. It's probably more of an internet thing than anything. It's probably ME.
I wonder - am I a hypocrite? Maybe I don't give women the same respect at the table as I do men. I hope that's not the case...but I have to wonder...
Unfortunately, I have seen some of these ladies go all-in with a 7 8 un-suited pre-flop and WIN! This bugs me. I have also seen players with 100% view-flop percentages last longer than me. UGH! UGH!
I have been frustrated and easily angered by what I deem as bad plays; however, these plays have been successful for the most part. Is it that these women are more intuitive than I am? Is it that they are just better players than I am? Could part of their strategy be to bluff and make people - LIKE ME - angry so that they play worse? If so, it's worked; and, my hats off to them. They have me totally on the ropes it would seem. And I start to take chances I shouldn't and wouldn't otherwise make. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid me.
I'm a real emotional player. I am working hard to treat poker as a business and not a personal attack. I have a Phil Hellmuth tendency to criticize play and get really angry...like HOW COULD YOU? WHAT - ARE YOU CRAZY? Unlike Phil, I keep it to myself or just kvetch to my husband. I think he's sick of hearing about it. I know my 9 year old son is.
I wonder - should I play at the WSOP Ladies Main Event this year? Maybe it's not my year. Maybe I play better with the boys. Maybe I'm not as good of a player as I think I am. Of course, the next WSOP Ladies Main Event Satellite event is coming up. Will I be playing again? YES!!!! Will I win this time? I don't know.
My strategy is going to be simple. Will I share it? I'm not sure...what if you're there? Will you take advantage of me too? (hehe)
Basically, I'm going to strip down my game and play the basics.
1) Good Starting Hands. Nothing less than top ten from early position and blackjack hands in late position, especially if they're suited.
2) Believe my opponents' bets even if it hurts.
3) Have fun. In the end, that's all that matters. I love poker and whether I get to the WSOP this year, next year or when I turn 40 (7 years from now), I'll get there.
Hope to see y'all there! For info on the Titan Poker Ladies WSOP Satellites, check out this article, y'all.
