World Poker Tour Starts Ladies Only League

On January 9, 2008, The World Poker Tour announced its launch of a Ladies Only League. The WPTL features a series of tournaments, which kick off on January 20, 2008 at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City. The creation of the league shows that the WPT, as evidenced by this statement from WPT Studios VP, Robyn Moder, recognizes that “women are a rising force in poker.”
Here’s a full list of events planned so far including buy-in, date and location:
- Jan 20: Borgata Hotel Casino, Atlantic City, NJ ($300/$50)
- Feb. 2 -3: Commerce Casino, Los Angelesm CA ($970/$95)
- March 16: Bay 101, San Jose, CA ($300/$30)
- March 29: Foxwoods Resort & Casino, Mashantucket, CT ($540/$70)
- April 13 – 14: Bellagio Ladies Championship, Las Vegas, NV ($1500/$90)
According to a WPT press release, the tournament series, by varying the buy-ins, provides “multiple opportunities for amateur, semi-pro and professional female players to test their skills in a tournament environment at prestigious gaming destinations without having to pay a costly five-figure buy-in.”
To show the WPT’s commitment to women in general, 15% of each championship buy-in will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help fight the battle against breast cancer. That final table of the championship tournament, which will be played on April 25, 2008, will be filmed for and aired on GSN later this year.
