Player Profile - Todd Brunson
August 12, 2006 -The old saying, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," is certainly true when it comes to Todd Brunson, son of the legendary poker player, Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson.
In 1989 after three years of studying law at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Todd announced to his family that he wasn't going back to school for his senior year. "I wanted to be a professional poker player," he explained. Believe it or not, but there wasn't much talk about gambling inside the Brunson household and Doyle didn't even know if Todd knew how to play poker. Indeed, Todd knew how to play well. He had been frequenting the tables during college for quite some time. Todd had gotten fairly proficient and decided he liked it more than his studies. So at the age of 20, Todd started his career as a poker pro.
It soon became apparent that he had the skills to win. When he was 21, Todd won first-place at the $200,000 main-event in the Diamond Jim Brady tournament at the Bicycle Club in Los Angeles. It was the first of twelve career wins in big tournaments including 4 in the past year and 3 second place finishes.
Other tournament results include Todd's first World Series of Poker bracelet in the Omaha High-Low Split this year, sixth place at the 2005 WSOP Pot Limit Omaha event, second place at the No Limit Hold'Em Ultimate Poker Challenge in Las Vegas, and first place at the Festa al Lago II tournament on June 26th, 2004.
By winning his first WSOP bracelet this year, Todd and Doyle became the only father and son combination to win WSOP championships not only in the same year but also overall.
Todd plays daily in the world's largest ongoing poker game, in which he is one of the most consistent winners. But, although his strengths at hold'em are unquestionable, his insights into seven-card stud eight-or-better are perhaps even more remarkable.
Todd's dominance in stud eight-or-better is so apparent that it led his legendary father to select him to write that section of his book Super System 2, the sequel to Super System, considered by most to be the "Bible" of poker.
Todd currently resides in Las Vegas, NV with his wife. He continues to play in the biggest games the world has to offer and is scheduled to appear in several television tournaments.
