“The Grand” is a comedy which takes place during the “second most popular tournament in the world.” This improv piece, directed by Wesleyan College graduate Zak Penn, who lensed “X-Men: The Last Stand” back in ’06 features oodles of celebs, many of whom we’ve seen on the poker circuit to varying degrees. People such as Shannon Elizabeth, Cheryl Hines, Gabe Kaplan, Ray Romano, Hank Azaria and David Cross will portray poker players in this fictional mockumentary in the style of Christopher Guest (“Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show”).
Funnywoman Cheryl Hines (Celebrity Poker Showdown, Curb Your Enthusiasm) portrays a manipulative, trash-talking chick who actively undermines her loser brother (David Cross) and silly househusband (Ray Romano) during the tournament.
Penn outlined basic character traits for each actor, allowing them to go off on their own improvisational (and often hysterical) tangent. Basically, the dialogue and poker play is completely up to the actors. The script didn’t specify a winner. The ending was determined by the game played between the actors on-set.
Filming of the flick took place at the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. It's set to debut in the US on March 21, 2008.
