Spring Break - A Poker Vacation?
March 26, 2006 -I'm a mom. I have two young children - Timmy, who just turned 9, and Marisa, who will be 4 this summer. I adore my children. They are truly the light of my life. However, motherhood is quite a challenge. It's constant. No end. No vacations. There are days when I look forward to their going to school.
It's not that I don't love spending time with them. They charm me constantly. They are amazing. Truly! You moms out there will understand. Those of you who aren't - I'm sorry to gush about my babies but not terribly so.
Last week, my kids were on spring break. My husband had to work. He had the real Spring Break let me tell you. I had a hard time keeping up with them. Of course, last week my fibro had to flare up too! Figures, right?
I try to spend time playing poker and writing when they're at school. The time is very short, believe it or not. I treasure it. In fact, I think the time spent doing things I enjoy makes me a better mother. Unfortunately, between work, kids and poker, I don't have time to do much else. (Don't even ask about my house. I think 'early American junkyard' currently describes the decor and mess.)
I played a little poker while they were home ... but not well! In fact, my game down-right sucked. It's hard to keep one eye on a toddler who is jumping on your couch and a 9 year old who's "SOOOOOOOOOO BOHHHHHHHHHH-REEEDDDDD!!!!" I donked off money. Called an all-in bet with a 42 off-suit. Guess how that one turned out???
I told you I wasn't paying attention. I did stupid stuff. Really, dumb!
I lost quite a bit of cash last week. It was a tough week. I should've taken a 'poker vacation' and not the good kind - where you get to go away and play. I should've stayed away from the game entirely. At least until they went to sleep! But, by then, I was too tired myself to play.
That's the point of this article. There are times when you should take a break from the game. There are times when you have to step away for reasons that are out of your control... especially if you are a parent. There are times when the best - and most profitable move - is to not play the game at all.
Wish I didn't have to learn that one the hard way! Ughh! Now, what am I going to do during summer vacation?
