Randy “The Natural” Couture is the first man to win three UFC heavyweight titles. Beneath the tough exterior lies a heart of gold. Couture recently held a charity poker tournament at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. On Saturday January 12, 2008 123 players showed up to support Couture’s foundation the Xtreme Couture GI Foundation, which aids wounded soldiers and their families.
“Operation All-In,” as the tournament is called, cost $550 to play with $200 rebuys. 2006 WSOP Main Event champ, Jamie Gold, hosted the event just two days after teaching Couture how to play hold’em. Gold also helped recruit some of the pros and celebs who appeared at the event including Todd and Pamela Brunson, Doyle’s poker-playing spawn, Hoyt Corkins, Kirk Morrison, former TV “Superman” Dean Cain and Montel Williams. Baseball player Jose Canseco and Toronto Blue Jay Mike Wells were also in attendance.
Making the final table were Phil Gordon and Scott Ian of Anthrax. Gordon, who finished in fourth place and earned $4000, immediately donated that back to the charity. The eventual winner was Jamie Scott. He received $20,000, which he also donated directly to Couture’s fund.
