Friday, December 7, 2007, the European poker community turned its attention to the Aviation Club in Paris, France, the site of the 2007 Poker Europa Awards. Winning her first major award was 19 year old Norwegian poker phenom, Annette Obrestad. Annette, who won the WSOPE Main Event in September, took home the coveted “Tournament Performance of the Year” award for that $2 million win. She’s the youngest player ever to receive the honor. Annette beat out Spaniard Carlos Mortensen for the award. Mortensen became the first European to win both a WSOP and WPT championship.
Obrestad was also nominated in the “Leading Lady” category. However, the honor went to Germany’s Katja “Lady Horror” Thater. The PokerStars-sponsored pro won her first World Series of Poker bracelet in Razz this past summer. She also finished fifth in the 2007 WSOP Ladies NLHE Championship.
The shy and humble Obrestad said she was “happy to win this award…because I was up against such great players.” She also told reporters that she is “still learning so much.”
Congrats to Obrestad and Thater for their well-deserved awards!
