Player Profile - Liz Lieu

March 17, 2007 - Domenica DiPiero

Born in Vietnam in 1974, the lovely Lieu currently resides in Los Angeles, California, although she isn’t shy about making the trip to Las Vegas in order to play at the Bellagio, one of her favorite places to play.  While she has yet to claim a World Series of Poker bracelet, it is one of her immediate goals and, watching how she plays, earning one won’t be long off.

Lieu has been playing poker for 12 years, although only the last four have been as a professional. Limit is her game of choice for cash games, from where she made a living until she added tournament competition to the mix several years ago. Her tournament game of choice is No-Limit, of course ‘cuz that’s where the biggest and best action is at.

Regardless of the limit, Lieu loves Hold’em. It’s by far her fave, although she knows how to play the other games. She, like many other pros, understands that you have to put your moneymaking efforts into the Big Game.

Lieu garnered plenty of attention just by showing up at the 2005 World Series of Poker, with her looks and her style brightening each table she played. When she finished fifth in the first event of the season, upon the advice of her pal, John Phan, pocketing $168,000, there was no mistake that this newcomer was a serious player of the game. Liz then went on to place 12th in the $5,000 NLHE event and cashed in the $3,000 NLHE event during the WSOP in 2005. She’s made appearances at the WPT and has earned over half a million dollars in tournaments thus far.

She is single, and as such has the time to invest sitting for hours at a poker table, sharpening her skills. She cautions those tempted by the glamour of the professional poker life shown on television that it can be a hard road. The time at the table can take its toll, costing a person a bit of health, looks, and premature aging in addition to their bankroll.

If you happen to sit in on a side game at the Bellagio and want to avoid risking your chips to this poker beauty, stay away from the $60-$180 stakes games, because that is where you will find her. On the other hand, if you want to test your skills against this pro and are willing to pay the price of admission, be warned; she describes her style as very aggressive, seeking out the biggest games there are.

Like any true professional in any field, Liz Lieu learns from each experience, each game she plays, and is driven by healthy ambition. Keep an eye on this rising star, and don’t be surprised if the next time you see her she has added some WSOP bling to her daintly little wrist.
