On Sunday, January 13, 2008 the ladies had their day at the World Poker Open. Sponsored by the Ladies International Poker Series (LIPS), the $340 buy-in No-Limit Tournament attracted 237 women including the recent WSOPC Tunica Ladies Champ, Jennifer Golin. Golin capped off an impressive week by finishing in seventeenth position here, earning an additional $672.

Overall, the tournament was wild and fast-paced. From start to finish, the tourney took only eleven hours to complete with less than two of those set aside for the entire final table. On the very first hand of the final table, Judi Glidewell was knocked out. Hand #2 yielded yet another KO as Barb Watson hit the rail.

Christy King, a resident of Lakeland, TN struck next, sending Pam Dukus back to Atlanta in seventh place. Diane Hughes then made her last stand with an A,Q in the hole. The trouble hand proved nothing but for her as Helen Ellis called and flipped over the dominant A,K. The board dealt the ladies blanks so kickers played and Hughes bid adieu to the table.

Ouch!

King, the eventual champ of this event, ousted two players soon thereafter with her set of tens. Dorothy Gant took fifth position and Michelle Nyers finished in fourth due to their chip accounts prior to the start of the hand.

Della Jones, who had been nursing a short stack for much of the final table, finally succumbed to King’s backdoor heart flush. The resident of Sand Springs, OK earned nearly $7,000 for her efforts.

As heads-up play got underway, King had a massive chip lead over New York’s own Helen Ellis. Helen fought her way tooth and nail, at one point coming within a stone’s throw of overtaking King’s lead. However, it was not to be for Ellis. King sent her packing with the nut full house, taking the title and the $22,168.
