The National Poker League (NPL) headed to The Venetian the week after Thanksgiving for the Vegas Open. Kathy Liebert, the first woman to ever win a tournament with a million dollar prize pool, took down the very first event in this series. She won the $2500 buy-in NLHE tourney, receiving $55,619 and a seat to the Main Event. En route to the win, Kathy defeated the 2007 WSOP Player of the Year (POY) Tom Schneider.
The NPL brought out some seriously talented professionals. The Vegas Open hosted the crème de la crème in the industry. For the Main Event, John Juanda, Joe Sebok, Gavin Smith, Toto Leonidas and the eventual champ, Allen Cunningham – better known to Chicksnchips readers as Melissa Hayden’s beau – were amongst the 57 players in attendance.
Jennifer Harman, Beth Shak, runner up in Event #28 at the 2007 WSOP, and the aforementioned Liebert also sat down to play in this tournament. None of these fantastic ladies made it to the final table. However, just by sitting down with this titanic field, they proved that they are die-hard professionals. They’ve got the talent, the drive and the ability to make it to the top, where women poker players belong.
Harman, the last lady standing, made it deep into Day One, only to have her aces cracked by the K,10 of her opponent. Ouch!
