Kristy Gazes is Ladies Night V Champ
September 07, 2007 - Domenica DiPiero
Kristy "Mixed Games" Gazes is one of our favorite poker players. The beautiful lady is a poker shark with a great deal of card sense. Kristy, who earned her nickname, because she prefers games like Omaha hi/lo is one of the best players in the world today, male or female. She began focusing more on NLHE a few years back because, let's face it - that's where the money is.
Apparently, Kristy is a quick study because she's rapidly becoming a real force to be reckoned with. She was one of four invitees this year to the World Poker Tour's Ladies Night tournament. JJ Liu, last year's champ - the event is currently in its fifth season and one of the WPT's most popular, returned to defend her title, and, Pamela Brunson, Doyle's daughter, who won her way in via a qualifier during the Legends of Poker tournament series, sat alongside Gazes with Melissa Hayden, Linda Johnson, and Mimi Tran.
Gazes started strong, knocking out JJ Liu in the very first hand. Tran, who was been cheered on by her mentor, Barry Greenstein and his son, Joe Sebok, drew blood next. She sent Melissa Hayden, Allen Cunningham's galpal and a fellow top-ranked female player, to the rail, in fifth place.
Unfortunately Mimi was the next one to go. Her A,10 couldn't beat Linda Johnson's pocket tens. Johnson, a regular commentator for the WPT, also claimed the next victim, Pam Brunson.
Against Gazes, Johnson's luck ran out. The heads-up match didn't last long. On the final hand, Johnson's pocket jacks couldn't defeat Gazes' cowboys in the hole. Gazes was thrilled with the win, her first WPT title and eleventh cash on the tour.
