10 of the Most Frightening Poker-Related Things We’ve Ever Seen
October 31, 2007 - Deanna Goodson
Poker is a sick and twisted game sometimes. Who hasn’t woken up screaming in the middle of the night, panting and sweating in remembrance of a bad beat? What about the transformation of your nice neighbor into a Hellmuth-inspired, tiltboy? It’s more frightening than that Jeckyll and Hyde thing they’re showing on classic horror movie channels as we type this. Eek!
Some of these items are really disgusting. Others are just tongue-in-cheek, but still sick. All we can say is that horror takes on many forms. Enjoy!
Without further ado, this is our top ten list:
10) JC Tran’s aces get cracked on the WPT:
9) Annie Duke throws this “Poker Star” off.
8) Lucky You (2007). Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana team up in this monstrously-bad poker flick that focuses on unfulfilled dreams and romance. Ugh!
7) Sharing a table with both Phil Hellmuth and Mike Matusow on the same day you forgot to bring your iPod. These legendary trash-talkers love to mix it up at the table…and are often happy to insult each other as well as you, especially if you suffer the misfortune of making a mis-step in front of them.
6) Negreanu deals out a bad beat to the Magician and his pocket jacks. Ouch!
5) A cold deck with pocket kings, queens and aces vying for the top spot. Now that’ll give you chills.
4) Watching Tony G and his big mouth at the WPT event at the Aviation Club de Paris in ’06.
3) Jamie Gold’s dismissal of Allen Cunningham at the 2006 WSOP Main Event:
2) Phil Ivey’s failure to win the big one. The Tiger Woods of Poker has yet to win a WSOP or WPT championship. He’s got tons of bracelets and oodles of final tables racked up. The dude is so good at the game that it’s positively scary that he hasn’t been able to capitalize in this way…YET!
1) Il Cartaio (The Cardplayer). This 2004 horror flick penned and directed by Giallo master, Dario Argento, features a sick, serial killer who plays a deadly game of video poker with the local police. The prize – the life of one of his victims?
