Online Poker Player Spotlight - Betfair's Erik1234
February 22, 2007 - Deanna Goodson
Erik1234 (you might be able to guess who that is) has been tearing up the high stakes tables on Betfair Poker all year.
Despite losing the hand below he was dominant against “sansone” playing with his highly aggressive style.
The hand below is an interesting one – you might think, how on earth did all the chips go in?
In fact Erik was a preflop raiser to $3000 which was swiftly followed by a $9000 raise on the flop – which was called by “sansone”. An unusual call you might think but this is high-stakes heads-up and he was showing real strength with the call so could have been planning to push all in on the turn regardless. He hit the jack so check-called all in instead. To the outsider there is seemingly no clear logic in these games where players throw around what represents more than year’s salary for the average person.
Betfair Poker pro Ben Grundy said – “In heads-up games like this you hardly ever like the flop anyway, sansone was calling to take the pot later. Heads-up is really about nerve. If you are dealt Ace Queen you’re unlikely to hit anything on the flop but you’ll almost always raise pre-flop and on the flop whatever comes. It’s about who folds first a lot of the time.”
Pots of $100,000 are becoming a regular occurrence on Betfair Poker but games start from as little as from $0.05/$0.10 and STTs from $2.75.
