The Chicas Check Out of EPT Barcelona Event Early
September 05, 2007 - Domenica DiPiero
Katja Thater and Isabelle Mercier led the way for TeamPokerStars as the EPT’s fourth season kicked off in Barcelona last week. The lovely lasses joined fellow PokerStars’ pros Daniel Negreanu, Luca Pagano, Greg Raymer and Humberto Brenes in Catalonia’s fashion capital. A total of 263 folks were there to play including Annette Obrestad, the Norwegian teenage poker phenom, and Liz Lieu, the poker diva herself.
Obrestad and Thater played well during Day 1a. Each woman survived into Day Two. Obrestad was holding tight with 9700 chips, and Thater held about twice that as action ended on that very first day.
Day 1b saw play by Mercier and Lieu. Mercier was among the many early casualties of the day. Lieu had 8500 chips left in her stack by day’s end, but she had been called away to attend to a family emergency so it was unclear whether she’d be able to return before she was blinded out.
On Day Two, Paul Wasicka, the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up, knocked out Annette Obrestad and one other player on the same hand. Poor Annette went all-in with her pocket kings, but kwikfish caught a set on the flop with his eights in the hole. Thater was one of 56 players who made it to the end of Day Two. However, Thater wouldn’t survive the end of Day Three. She was the top female finisher. Her 47th place exit was good for $16,692.
Juan Maceiras, father of Spanish poker powerhouse, Maria “May” Maceiras, was still in the hunt. He made it to the final table, finishing in ninth and earning over $86,000. Congrats go to Sander Lyllof, of Copenhagen, Denmark, who defeated his roommate and close friend, Mark Teltscher, himself a former EPT champ, heads-up to win the title and over $1.5 million in cash.
