In mid-November, the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas opened. As part of the celebration, a slew of talented and handsome male celebrities turned out to play some poker. Rapper Nelly, actor Mekhi Phifer (ER), who recently hosted a Christmas party for family friends in NYC featuring a special poker tournament with a grand prize he paid for himself – two tickets to the Bahamas, and actor/comedians Eddie Griffin and Anthony Anderson hit the felt for a special tournament, filmed by BET. The show, which is called Black Poker Superstars, is set to air early in 2008.
David Williams did commentary and Matt Savage was the tournament director. Players competed in two matches. The top point getters made it to the final table along with one wildcard player who won a third match against others who didn’t accumulate enough points to move on.
Making the final table was Kevin Hart, who starred in several of the Wayans’ Scary Movie films. He finished first and second in his two heats. However, we heard that a lot of attention was paid to a special cash game that sprang up on the side including Williams and Nelly. Nelly took a ton of chips off of the poker pro, joking that he’d need his jacket to carry all his chips to the cashier.
The winner of the event won’t be released ‘til the show airs. Check BET for more information on when and where.
